Religion, Homosexuality and Homophobia
Religion, Homosexuality and Homophobia together on any given day makes for a sensitive and controversial issue. It was this issue that was addressed at a discussion at the International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES) on Thursday 19 May 2011. The discussion was attended by Dr. Lenagala Siriniwasa Thera, Rev. Sydney Knight and N.M. Reyaz who spoke about what Buddhism, Christianity and Islam had to say about homosexuality.
INASP-ICES Workshop on Research Writing Skills
15 – 19 March 2010, “INASP-ICES Workshop on Research Writing Skills”, at Hotel Tormaline, Kandy. The workshop was conducted by Prof Barbara Gastel, MD, MPH, Texas A&M University and Mr Bernard Appiah, Author AID Graduate Assistant, Texas A&M University with Sri Lankan co-facilitators, Prof Tudor Silva and Dr S Mahakalanda. The workshop was attended by 41 participants.

23 – 25 August 2009, International Conference: “The Sri Lanka Conference on Peace and Development”, Organized jointly with the University of Peradeniya, the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg and the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University with financial support from Swedish South Asian Studies Network (SASNET).
Group Discussion
4 August 2009, Group Discussion involving four US scholars, Mr Dov Wilker (American Jewish Committee), Ms Meg Heubeck (Center for Politics, University of Virginia), Carmiel Arbit, Daman Irby – who visited Sri Lanka on a Professional Exchange Program of the American Embassy – and a selected group of Sri Lankans that included clergy, academics, undergraduates, NGO officials and other professionals.
Demonstration on JSTOR
16 December 2008, Demonstration on JSTOR, an online archive of scholarly literature, by Ms. Ira Unamboowe, the Director of the American Institute for Sri Lankan Studies.
Seventeen participants from such institute as the Institute of Fundamental Studies (Librarian), Department of Agriculture (two members of Library staff), Department of Export Agriculture (Research Officer), Hillwood College (Teachers), Trinity College (Teachers), American Corner (Librarian), Veterinary Research Institute (Two members of the Library staff), Environmental Protection and Scientific Exploration Organization (Three officers), National Institute of Cooperative Development (Librarian) and Police Department (DIG’s office-IT Division) attended the demonstration.
