Advancing Truth, Justice and Reconciliation

The International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES) is pleased to invite you to a discussion on ‘Truth, Justice and Reconciliation’ at the ‘Hall de Galle’ on 2nd November from 2 to 6 p.m. The discussion will take place in Sinhala with interpretation in English. Eduardo Gonzalez, Dr. Bina D’ Costa, and Niran Anketell, will lead the discussion which will be moderated by Balachandran Gowthaman.
Eduardo González, who has worked previously with the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the International Center for Transitional Justice in New York, will talk about the experiences of Peru, Tunisia, Colombia, Timor-Leste and Canada. Bina D’Costa is a Fellow at the Australian National University, and will discuss the recent Bangladeshi experience in pursuing accountability. Niran Anketell, a Sri Lankan lawyer, will discuss the proposals of the current government on truth and justice, and discuss options for Sri Lanka.
The objective of the discussion is to contribute to a relevant process of truth, justice and reconciliation in Sri Lanka. This discussion seeks to do this by providing space for people from different communities to discuss the variety of different options that may be available in order to forge a truth, justice and reconciliation process that is sensitive to the peculiarities of the Sri Lankan conflict. It also provides an opportunity to learn from the experiences of other countries that have gone through similar conflicts.
