The International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES) organized a conference on Caste, Social Justice and Democracy on the 19th and 20th of November, 2016. The conference featured K.M. de Silva, Kumari Jayawardene, Gananath Obeyesekere, John Rogers, Nireka Weeratunge and many other scholars and researchers engaged in the field. The conference discussed the following key areas:

  1. Review recent research on caste in Sri Lanka
  2. Identify gaps in current knowledge about the status of caste in relation to identity dynamics, social justice and democracy in contemporary Sri Lanka
  3. Assess the effectiveness of existing social policies and laws for addressing caste based social inequalities in Sri Lanka
