On the Move: Gender and Seasonal Fisheries Migration in Sri Lanka

The International Centre for Ethnic Studies is pleased to share policy recommendations stemming from a study on four fishing communities in the Trincomalee and Puttalam districts. The research, conducted between 2016 and 2019, focused on migration patterns, livelihoods, and wellbeing, among fishing communities in the two regions. The study sought to examine the migration patterns of fishers in Sri Lanka; the different impacts of migration on the material, relational and subjective wellbeing of migrant and host fishers; and their gendered experiences and challenges. The study generated fourpapers, which will be published by Routledge, along with papers from Cambodia and India, in an edited volume to be released later this year. A summary of the research will be released as an ICES Monograph.
